There are many items that are great to collect, such as baseball cards, postage stamps and comic books. These items can last forever and possibly make you money in the long run. Makeup on the other hand is a very bad investment because the second you open a product – it’s worthless. Makeup also expires and becomes a breeding ground for bacteria within a couple of years when the preservatives break down. This is why a minimalist makeup collection is the way to go and in this post I will talk about the pro’s and con’s I have experienced from keeping a minimalist makeup collection.
Pro’s of a Minimalist Makeup Collection
Save money: I wasted hundreds of dollars on makeup before I learnt that I reached for the same products almost every day. I once owned 36 lipsticks but only used 3 of them regularly. Many of them were so similar in colour that you couldn’t tell them apart when applied. Knowing what colours work with your skin tone can help you know what shades suit you so you dont waste money on products that don’t make you feel your best. It has taken me way too long to learn that I would never wear bright purple lipstick in public. So by avoiding buying similar colours and only buying shades that you know suit you (you would actually wear) can save you money.
Save time: My beauty routine used to be so time consuming. Applying my makeup took 20 to 30 minutes. I would waste time searching for products in my overflowing draw, looking for the right brush in a huge stack, selecting different shades and removing my makeup to start again because I forgot my oil based foundation didn’t work with my water based primer. My new makeup routine now takes about 5 minutes. Owning only a few products that I know work for me and work well together has allowed me to streamline the makeup application process.
Less mess: My makeup table used to be a mess after I did my makeup because I had to take products out to find the products hidden underneath them. By having a quick routine with minimal products, it’s easy to put everything back straight away (mainly because it all actually fits). My current makeup collection doesn’t even fill up the tub I used to store just my foundations. It’s so much easier to keep things tidy when you don’t own a lot.
Quality over quantity: The money you save by buying less can be invested in better quality products. Instead of buying three drugstore blushers, why not just buy one designer blush? I always told myself I could not afford luxury makeup but since I stopped wasting money on cheaper products I found I could invest in higher end brands. Although the novelty does wear off over time, I do sometimes take a second to appreciate my luxury products.
Con’s of a Minimalist Makeup Collection
Less variety: While this is also a good thing because it saves time and having to make decisions, sometimes you feel like mixing things up and you can’t if you don’t have many options. When I first went minimalist I was using only one lip colour and I got a bit bored of it so I purchased a couple more and I was so much happier. My collection is still minimal but allowing myself a couple of options made applying makeup more fun. Balance is best.
